Dozens Years look aback to view City ZhenJiang
—A special interview on Mr.ChenDaJiang the retired photographerof ZhenJiang Daily.
This clear and bright morning I arrived at the footof attic YunTai. There the door still shut and a group of old men and women were practicing TaiJi Boxing in the front in graceful postures. Mount YunTai stood the same clear and bright on which the beautiful scene of dozens miles could be easily attained. I raised my head high to read a few long lines of Chinese couplets in front of the main gate. It reads: “Ferry XiJing arrived you can acquire lucky, peace and secure life in the study of Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism.” “Attic YunTai mounted you can enjoy the scene of prosperous society in the admiration of hill, water and urban” “Harmony on hill garlic” Then I recalled my present journey is to have a specially interview on Mr.ChenDaJing—a retired photographer from ZhenJiang Daily to admire the hill, water and urban in his old photos. So I dare not detain on the mount and hurried down to enter JingYi tea house and liberary.
An old black-and-white photo was projected onto thes creen. Viewed in a distance the picture look blur in its grey spread only the east flowing river still remains the outline of present. Approached much nearer then the low hills in the rise and fall could be detected but still it’s a far reaching plain. Water looks like shallow lake with islets in. It has a smooth surface in the distant view. The islet in the water should be Park JiaoShan in that age. JinShan, BeiGu and XiangShan hills also stand by the water side so looked like islets too. Low civilian quarters spread full along the river side then they stretch far and wide into the plain to hide and seek in the hilly region in the hills like mount YunTai, NanShan etc. I can’t see any landmark architectures in the old photo so it turned strange to me for the instance. While we had been lived and walked in the strangeness every day without acknowledgment of its appearance as a whole.

The lens drew out and the things magnified to beclear. The photos drew us back to the ZhenJiang in the end of 1980’s. They showed the area around downtown DaShiKou by then: the photos were in black and white too. It may be looked black and white even if taken by color camera forin my memory the old DaShiKou were mainly constructed in grey concrete structures. JingJiang restaurant looked much higher among them in four or five floors with old XinHua cinema located to its west side. For sure the cinema stood low with merely two floors. Opposite the cinema on the other side of street stood No.2 department store and TongQingLou restaurant to its westall in three or four stories high. The exhibition and selling house of local light industry bureau erected to the east of the department store opposite the street within the city parlor square of today. Further west across the street there had been a spacious land where a great mosque stood on a shallow slope. If you took a south turn from the mosque you would reach the old XinHua book store—the predecessor of present Phoenix Book Store where a lot of on-line nation-wide publication could be purchased. The book store always listed No.1 for so many years until now in ZhenJiang.
The image looks black-and-white while the memorythey recalled are colorful. The familiar photos arose countless events in thepast: I had seen many films in the old XinHua cinema. <The eagle aboveLondon>impressed me the most among them for I had been interested in theshow reflecting World War the second. Sometimes in the summer when the film wasput to an end it was showering outside. People were detained in the cinema. Frequentlyanxious people would rise up the thick purple colored leather curtain of theentrance to probe outside. The first book on science and technology I boughthad been from the old XinHua book store. I can still remember the title to be<The Science of Today> there’s no digital concept by then so the bookmainly introduces knowledge on the ocean, sky, out-space and industrialization. In the age when we run short of media the book nurtured my psychology to thegreatest extend. One thing more, the dumplings made by TongQingLou restaurant tastesgood and a snack bar selling hot and cold drink as well as instant food hadbeen established on the first floor. Porridge made of red beans or green beanshad been on its list of selling and wonton also. I had paid my visit inchildhood for many times and tasted them. ZhenJiang in the 1980’s even theprosperous DaXi Road lack the kind of entertainment. The old No.2 departmentstore had been unique in that age and most of my stationary as long as sports facilities by then had been purchased there……
Concerning the origin of these photos Mr.ChengDaJing began his retell: theycame from the shooting of a TV series <The Story of YangZi River> whichwas well known all over the nation. Mr.ChengDaJing had been in the camera crew aslocal attendant. He had taken part in the camera shooting on the helicopterwhen the image of ZhenJiang by that age was recorded in high-definition—the imageof the city in the same location and name but different time. In 1980’s thehelicopter was a rare thing in ZhenJiang so it was with the whole country. Few helicoptersfor civil use could be seen, for which camera crew couldn’t hide themselvesbehind the observation of the local nor could they escape from the curious eyesof mine in my childhood. Dolphin—that is to say Z-9 civil type was the onlydependable medium sized helicopter for civil application by that time. There hadbeen a camera man who fastened himself firm on the landing gear—the posturelike 007 special task group member posed in the TV series.
Mr.ChengDaJing in his old black-and-white Photos looks a heroic man in high spirit and tall build. Nowhis hair has turned scant while still young in his talk. Cheng said little about himself instead he kept clicking the mouse and made presentation one frameafter anther in service. The old local men and women in the tea house cried in surprise and enjoyment for they can recognize the old scene on display. The photo presentation can trace back to 1957 when sailing ships set up their giantcanvas on the trip. The spot is somewhere under mount BeiGu and the canvaslooks huge in the full spread. Photos much earlier had been searched out from archives by Mr.ChengDaJing himself while few people attended the show could recognize them. One or two storied wooden houses filled the street of ZhenJiang by then. Their dark color stands in contrast to those surrounding in light grey. There’s a concrete military stronghold at a cross road on one photo. Judging from the cement and style it must be used for city defense by the GuoMingDang army before liberation. Another old photo showed a small wooden boat swaying a head in a branch of River YangZi. However slant in its travel the boatman looks forever tranquil in his rowing as if nothing could ever happen……
This old gentleman ChengDaJing had provided us with his rich photo coverage not limited to those men who had the chance to touch his photo archives. Too many local men and women had read them while faded out in their memory of the past. In 1980’s when newspaper was prevailing in the mass media TV was still a rare thing in the society and the radio can’t create image. Article filled full the space of newspaper so the few black and white pictures always counted as a treasure by people in that age. Some careful newspaper clippers might have clipped and remained them. If I could have the intention I was able to do the same for newspaper looked too popular at that time. But the majority did nothing like me.Then the present photo presentation turned out to be a delicacy……
When I returned to the top of mount YunTai, the attic had opened for sightseeing. I mounted to the corridor around the top floor through those paintings and woodcuts in the attic then the hills, water and the urban scene that had been in the lens of Mr.ChengDaJing fell into my view. The east flowing river branch had turned into tranquil Lake BeiHu only the old shape remained in itssmooth outline. Those successive docks that had split the bank line had been removed too. Green levee in prevention of flood stretches a few dozen miles along the old bank. The flow was cut for the water to fill. Clear water pattedthe cliffs by its side. Willow branches reached to the lake in which moon reflected. The water washed clean the glow. Trees in sunlight set background for the civil quarters. Snow white clouds fly and instantly reached the horizon. Those old civilian quarters in the photo of ChengDaJing were restricted into an area besieged by modern structures. And the area just stands under attic YunTai. The brick and tiled house all kept in their neat form with the walls in dark blue. When peoplego to shoot their cameras once more they have turned into historical sites so different to the scale in those photos presented by Mr.ChengDaJing.
